6 Types of Courage (Which One Are You Practicing Right Now?)

We tend to talk about courage like it's one big, dramatic thing - the leap, the speech, the life-changing decision.
But most courage doesn't look like that at all.
Most of it is smaller, quieter, and much closer to daily life than we give it credit for.
Once I started paying attention, I noticed courage actually comes in flavors. Some days you're ready for a small ask.
Other days you're working up to something that's been years in the making.
Neither one is "more brave" than the other - they're just different sizes of the same thing.
That noticing is what turned into The Little Cafe of Courage, a digital journal I made for processing rejection and practicing courage, one small step at a time - set up like a cozy little menu instead of a to-do list.
Here are the six kinds of courage in it.
☕ Starter Plates - easy, low-effort, low-stakes courage
This is the courage of small asks.
Sending the email you've been sitting on.
Asking a simple question out loud instead of guessing.
Recommending the restaurant instead of just going along with whatever everyone else picks.
Nothing here is high-stakes, and that's exactly the point - Starter Plates are how you build the muscle before you need it for something bigger.
You might be practicing this if: you keep putting off something small because even the small version feels uncomfortable.
☕ Familiar Comforts - honesty in safe spaces
This one is about practicing being seen by people who already know and like you.
Telling a close friend how you actually feel instead of the polished version.
Admitting you don't know something in front of your team.
Letting someone see you a little less put-together than usual.
You might be practicing this if: you're more honest with strangers than with the people closest to you.
☕ Tender Drafts - ready to be seen, creativity included
This is the courage of sharing something before it's finished, or perfect, or safe from opinions.
The unpolished essay.
The song that's still rough around the edges.
The idea you haven't fully worked out yet. Tender Drafts courage means showing the in-progress version, not just the highlight reel.
You might be practicing this if: you have a folder of "almost ready" work that's been almost ready for a long time.
☕ Quietly Brave - courage that doesn't need witnesses
Not all courage is public.
Some of the bravest things you'll ever do, no one will ever know about - choosing not to spiral into old self-talk, deciding you're allowed to want something, forgiving yourself for a mistake without needing anyone else to say it's okay first.
This is the courage of stopping self-rejection before it even starts.
You might be practicing this if: you've been waiting for permission that was always going to have to come from you.
☕ Threshold Walks - slow courage, life direction
This is the long-game courage.
Not a single moment, but a slow walk toward choosing yourself - a career change, a move, a relationship you finally end or finally begin.
Threshold Walks courage rarely feels dramatic in the moment.
It usually just feels like one more quiet decision, repeated until you've built a different life.
You might be practicing this if: you're in the middle of a change that doesn't have a finish line yet, and that's starting to feel okay.
☕ Specials Board - curious and willing to stretch
Every so often, you're not just ready - you're curious.
Willing to try the thing that has no guarantee attached, purely because you want to see what happens.
Specials Board courage is playful.
It's the pitch you didn't need to make, the trip you didn't need to take, the risk that isn't about fixing anything - just about stretching.
You might be practicing this if: something's been quietly tempting you, and you keep almost talking yourself out of it.

So, which one are you practicing right now?
Courage isn't a personality trait you either have or don't.
It's closer to a set of muscles, and different days call for different ones.
Some weeks you're all Starter Plates.
Some weeks you're deep in a Threshold Walk you didn't see coming.
The Little Cafe of Courage is built to meet you wherever you are on the menu - with prompts and journaling space for each section, so you can notice what went well, what didn't, and what you're actually ready to order next.
