Didn't do much today. Here's what I did do.

Read for a while.

Did a little work.
Spent time at home.
Wasted some time, probably.
Had a perfectly decent day.

I'm increasingly suspicious that a good life is mostly made up of days that wouldn't make very interesting highlight reels.

Cozy bedroom in autumn with rain and jazz music

There was a time when that sentence meant exactly what it said.

Come inside my house. Sit somewhere. Would you like something to drink. That was the whole offer, and it was enough.

Somewhere along the way, it started meaning something closer to: I have accepted full responsibility for producing an immersive hospitality experience, and you are now my guest of honor at an event I did not technically announce.

I'd like to know when hanging out started requiring production values.

There's this idea that fall means snapping back into hyper-productivity the second Labor Day hits, like summer was a fun little detour and now it's time to pay the toll.

I don't buy it. Summer and fall are different seasons of actual life, not just the weather, and pretending otherwise is how you end up exhausted by October 12th for no clear reason.

There's this idea that fall means snapping back into hyper-productivity the second Labor Day hits, like summer was a fun little detour and now it's time to pay the toll.

I don't buy it. Summer and fall are different seasons of actual life, not just the weather, and pretending otherwise is how you end up exhausted by October 12th for no clear reason.

I think we accidentally turned quiet living into another thing to achieve.

Enough boundaries, enough routines, enough decluttering and journaling and slow mornings and the right lamp, and eventually we unlock the version of adulthood where nothing annoys us and nothing goes wrong.

You will still have laundry.

Someone will still send an email that ruins your afternoon. The dishwasher needs unloading again. Plans get interrupted. The house gets messy. People you love will still occasionally make you want to scream into a pillow.

Quiet living was never about getting rid of friction. It's building a life you actually like enough that the irritating parts don't make you want to leave the whole thing.

That's the goal. Not peace. Just liking it here.

I read a "relaxing evening routine" recently and needed to lie down halfway through it.

Apparently, after finishing an entire day, I'm now supposed to do skincare, stretch, journal, meditate, drink an herbal tea I don't own, take supplements, practice gratitude, read something improving, lay out tomorrow's outfit, avoid all screens, do breathwork, light several candles, tidy the kitchen, reflect on my goals, and ideally achieve some kind of spiritual alignment with the moon.

Ma'am. I am tired.

We've somehow given rest its own to-do list. Now even the hours meant for doing less come with an itinerary, so we can be sure we're relaxing correctly, whatever that means.

Some nights I want the candles and the book and the twelve-step skincare routine. Other nights I want to wash my face, find the least demanding thing on television, and stop making decisions entirely.

A routine should be in service of your actual life. If maintaining your relaxing evening requires a project management tool, we've lost the thread somewhere.

The strange thing about seasonal bucket lists is how they can make you feel like you missed a season you were fully present for.
You watched the leaves change. You opened the window the first cold morning. You drank coffee in the dark. You noticed the sunset creeping earlier.
But you didn't make it to a pumpkin patch, so apparently October doesn't count.
Maybe experiencing a season has less to do with collecting activities and more to do with actually noticing you're in it.
